July 8, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with E
January 17, 2009: Massena Fire responded
with Engine 30 along with Massena Rescue and
the Massena Police Department for a two car
motor vehicle accident at the intersection
of Park and Beach Streets in the village.
One person was transported to the hospital.
January 16,
2009:
The Massena Volunteer Fire Department has
been awarded a grant in the amount of
$712,500 to help us replace our aging aerial
ladder truck. The grant was made
possible through the Assistance to
Firefighter's Grant program administered by
the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
December 22,
2008:
At approximately 8 a.m. Monday morning,
Massena Fire responded with Norfolk Fire to
a report of a furnace malfunction filling
the home with smoke on the Hough Road just
outside of Massena. While
en-route, Central Dispatch advised that it
was a structure fire. Engine 28
arrived and reported a working fire in a
trailer. Firefighters from both
departments made quick work of extinguishing
the blaze, saving the trailer. All
units were back in service by 9:30.
December 19,
2008:
Shortly before 5 a.m. Friday morning, the
Massena Fire Department responded to a
possible structure fire in an apartment
complex on Water street in the village.
Upon arrival, Engine 28 reported a working
fire on the second floor. The fire
quickly spread into the attic and began
moving towards the old Massena Building
Supply,
which was connected. Brasher-Winthrop
responded mutual-aid for the ladder truck,
while Louisville and Helena provided
manpower. Firefighters were able to
halt the advance of the fire and contain it
to the second floor. Firefighters
battled the blaze in below freezing temps
for several hours. All units were back
in service by noon.
Engine 28,
Engine Tower 1, Rescue 77 for a reported
structure fire on East Orvis Street in the
village shortly before 7:00 a.m.
Massena Fire arrived on scene in under two
minutes with thirty-one Massena Firemen,
including our career staff, responding.
The cause of the fire is still under
investigation.

July 1, 2008: Massena
Fire responded with Engine 28, Engine 30,
Rescue 77, and the tanker for a reported two
car motor vehicle accident resulting from a
high speed chase. 32-year old Seth
Moyer of Massena was initially stopped in
the village by the Massena Police
Department. As officers approached the
vehicle Mr. Moyer allegedly took off on a
high speed pursuit that ended when he
allegedly hit another vehicle from behind on
the Route 37 bridge just past the Port on
Entry near General Motors. Following
the collision the suspect fled his vehicle
requiring the use of a State Police
helicopter to conduct a search.
July 1, 2008: The
Massena Fire Department responded with
Engine 28 for a possible chlorine leak at
the Massena Arena. It was determined
to be a false alarm.
June 8, 2008: The
Massena Fire Department finished in first
place in our parade category at the Northern
New York Volunteer Firemen's Convention held
in Lake Placid. Accompanying the
department was the Massena Central High
School marching band who took first place in
the marching brand category.
May 31, 2008:
NEW FIREFIGHTERS GRADUATE -
Congratulations to the five most recent
graduates of basic firefighter training.
Firefighters Mark Power, Kyle Bigness, Pat
Carr, Joe Terminelli, and Darin Delosh
completed Firefighter I along with
firefighters from departments throughout the
county. This class, which runs
approximately 86 hours, provides entry level
training for new volunteer firefighters to
help prepare them for the many aspects of
their new role. The course combines
classroom, practical, and live fire
training.
April 3, 2008: FATAL ACCIDENT
- Massena Fire responded with
Engine 30 for a reported motor vehicle fire
shortly after 9 p.m. on State Route 37 near
Dairy Queen. A subsequent report
indicated the vehicle was on fire and the
tanker was dispatched as well as R-77 for
scene lighting. Massena firemen
attacked the fire with portable
extinguishers until the arrival of Engine
30. Firemen also used a film forming
foam to coat fuel and oil spilled by the
truck to make it safe for Massena Rescue to
extricate the single victim, who was later
pronounced dead at the scene by the cornorer.
April 1, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 30 and
Engine 28 to numerous calls for power lines
down and arcing due to the high winds
experienced throughout the area.
April 1, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with R-77 for a
reported flooded basement shortly after 7pm.
After arrival, firefighters discovered that
runoff from a field had pooled in the yard,
reaching 1-2 feet in depth. The
pooling water eventually began to breach the
basement walls, forcing the evacuation of
the occupant. Quick thinking by Lt.'s
O'Hare and Brownell led firefighters to
begin cutting channels through the ice and
to build dykes to divert the water, saving
the residence from further damage.
March 22, 2008:
At 8:36 p.m. Saturday night, Massena Fire was
dispatched to a house on Woodlawn Ave for a
reported basement fire. Engine 28 and ET-1
were en route immediately, followed closely
by R-77. A quick interior attack was
able to contain the fire to the electrical
panel in the basement. All units were
back in service by 21:51.
March 18, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 30 for a
motor vehicle accident at the intersection
of Phillips Street and Main Street in the
village. Massena Fire provided traffic
control until the accident could be cleared
from the roadway.
March 17, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 28 for a
report of smoke coming from the roof of a
house on Tamarack Street in the village.
Upon investigation it was determined that
the "smoke" was actually just a large amount
of steam coming from an open window in the
bathroom of the house which a neighbor
mistook for smoke and called in.
March 13, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 28 for a
reported electrical fire at 30 Middlebury
Avenue in the village. A electrical
cord had caught fire and was extinguished by
the resident. Massena Fire used a
thermal imaging camera to examine the area
for fire spread before all equipment was
placed back into service.

March 4, 2008: Massena
Fire responded for an apartment fire at 68
East Orvis Street. Brasher-Winthrop
Fire responded mutual aid. The cause
of the blaze was determined to be accidental
and the fire was quickly brought under
control.
March 10, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 30 a
motor vehicle accident at the corner of
bailey Road and State Route 37.
March 8, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 30 for a
reported two car motor vehicle accident on
Route 56. The call was determined to
be in Louisville's fire protection area and
they were toned out while Massena units
continued responding. One vehicle was
struck while exiting a driveway onto Route
56. The occupant of that vehicle was
later pronounced dead at Massena Memorial
Hospital.
February 29, 2008: Massena Fire responded with Engine 28 for a
report of a garbage truck which backed into
a pole on Paddock Street.
February 26, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 30 for a
one car rollover on Route 420 near the
Brouse Road.
February 25, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 30 for a
two car motor vehicle accident at the corner
of South Main and Cook Street in the
village.
February 23, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 28 for a
reported electrical fire at Wendy's
restaurant in the St. Lawrence Center mall.
February 22, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 30 for a
reported one car motor vehicle accident on
State Route 131 at the Massena Intake.
The operator of the vehicle lost control on
snow covered roads and struck the cement
wall on the intake.
February 21, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 30 for a
two car motor vehicle accident at the corner
of State Route 37 and 37C.
February 21, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 28 just
after 5:00 p.m. to 45 Chase Street for the
report of an electrical fire. Upon
arrival the cause was determined to be a
burned up vacuum cleaner cord which had
scorched the carpet.

February 18, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 28 this
morning for an automatic alarm at the St.
Regis Nursing Home. The call was later
upgraded when smoke was found coming from an
elevator. After further investigation
it was determined to be a burnt out
transformer in the elevator system.
February 17, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 28 for
the report of smoke inside the new Blair's
Sports shop in the Harte Haven plaza.
The building was ventilated and the origin
of smoke was determined to be coming from a
heating unit.
February 17, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 31 for a
reported transformer fire on Water Street in
the Village. The transformer was near
the intersection with Main St and was found
scorched with fluid streaming out of it.
Massena Fire controlled the scene while
Massena Electric responded to resolve the
problem.
February 16, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 30 for a
two car motor vehicle accident with injuries
near the Rusty Wheel. Command secured
the scene while Massena Rescue treated the
victims. Upon arrival at this scene
Massena Fire was called to Sunoco at the
corner of West Orvis and Main St for
the smell of gas. Engine 31 responded
and after investigation it was determined to
be a leak from a propane cylinder at the
side of the structure.

February 13, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 30 for a
one car motor vehicle accident on State
Highway 37 just west of the port of entry.
February 11, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 28 and
ETA-4 for a chimney fire on County Route 37
near the power sub-station. First
arriving units found overheating piping
spewing embers from the roof. Massena
firefighters laddered the roof to clear the
pipe and used three 20 pound dry chemical
extinguishers to put out the remaining
embers and fire.
February 11, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 30 for a
reported one car motor vehicle accident on
the Oneil road off State Route 37.
Upon arrival firefighters found one car
overturned and resting upside down off the
side of the road and tangled in a barbed
wire fence. Massena Rescue and Massena
Fire with assistance from the State Police
stabilized and extricated one patient from
the vehicle who was transported to M.M.H. by
Massena Rescue. R-77 was also called
to the scene for support and the Oneil Rd
was shut down for approximately one hour by
Massena Fire.
February 9, 2008:
Massena Fire responded with Engine 28 for an
automatic alarm activation at the St.
Lawrence centre mall.
February 9, 2008:
Massena Fire responded just after 5:00 p.m.
with Engine 30 for a reported motor vehicle
accident at the corner of State Route 131
and County Route 42. Upon arrival a
two car accident caused by a taxi rear
ending a second vehicle was discovered.
Massena Fire assisted New York State Police
with stabilizing the scene.
February 7, 2008:
Massena Fire responded just after 10:00 a.m.
with Engine 28 to the Seaway Administration
building on Andrews Street for an alarm
activation. Investigation determined a
plumber soldering pipes had cause the alarm.
February 2, 2008:
Massena Fire responded at 7:20 p.m. with
Engine 30 for a motor vehicle accident
involving multiple cars at the corner of
East Hatfield & Main Street. Traffic
control was provided by Massena Fire and one
patient was transported to M.M.H. by Massena
rescue.
January 31, 2008:
Massena Fire responded mid-morning on
Thursday for a reported structure fire at
Tony's Pizza on Main Street in the village.
A working structure fire forced several
residents to flee the building. The
fire spread rapidly and consumed three
buildings before firefighter's were able to
stop it's advance and bring it under
control. Mutual aid was provided by
Massena Rescue, Massena Police, Potsdam
Fire, Brasher-Winthrop Fire, Norfolk Fire, Helena Fire, and
Louisville was provided. As of Friday
afternoon no cause has yet been determined.

January 26,
2008:
Massena Permanent Firefighter's Local 2220
with assistance from the Massena Volunteer
Fire Department took on the WWNY Channel 7
No-Stars in a charity basketball event to
benefit M.D.A over the weekend. The
game ended in a 35-35 tie with over $1300.00
raised for the charity.

24, 2008:
Massena firefighters responded just before
4:00 p.m. with Engine 30 for a reported two
car motor vehicle accident involving a
personal injury. Massena Fire provided
traffic control while the patient was
accessed and transported by Massena Rescue.

24, 2008:
Massena firefighters responded around noon
for a reported snowmobile accident near the
intersection of Route 131 and County Route
42 near Massena Center. One patient
was transported from the scene by Massena
Rescue.

23, 2008:
Massena firefighters responded with Engine
28 for an alarm activation at the new Steve
& Barry's store at the St. Lawrence Center
mall. First arriving firefighter's
reported no visible smoke or flames but that
the store's sprinkler system was activated
and flooding the store. Upon
inspection the leak was found to be caused
by a broken pipe elbow in the piping for the
sprinkler system. The system was
temporarily deactivated pending service
work. Damage was limited to the very
front vestibule of the store.
